Commercial Software/Scripts?

15 November 2011 - 01:22 AM

We have been approached in the past, and recently regarding certain scripts we run on this website, by people requesting "copies" of our commercial scripts. Any scripts used on this website are purchased from the original developers, we do not encourage 'piracy' of any kind of material.

If anyone makes any reference to this in the future, we will pass your full details on to the relevant developer and we will ban you permanently from this website.

Scripts/products that we purchase are either commercial or we hold the full copyright for usage, this does not mean we will redistribute them in anyway. We do approach authors of scripts that we find of interest and will usually ask if we can purchase the full rights for its use, this is strictly via email only.

Like all developers, we do not 'give' away any scripts unless we have stated otherwise. We have quite a large download section and many packages are free to download, a minority are commercial. Developing products takes a lot of time, and in many cases fixing issues before releasing them for download - when we offer products on a commerical basis, this is normally because the product took much longer to develop than we expected. The revenue mostly goes back into the website, either in hosting, SSL certificates, domain purchases, or further scripts to increase our resources available.

Anyone that we feel has violated the aforementioned have just been 'banned'. Please be sensible and refrain from making such requests to us.

Optimizing Images for Websites

11 October 2011 - 01:13 PM

Many people that start websites never really look in to optimzing images, and end up with huge page loading times.

But optimzing images relies on many factors, and this includes the file type, obviously you do not use the GIF format for a photographic image, or you will be limiting your color palette to just 256 colors. You also have to consider how images are displayed on a page, it is no good going into Photoshop and designing a website template then exporting incorrectly and ending up with huge file sizes. Care must be taken in all aspects in design and how to code, so we try and stay away from graphic intensive pages.

Now, what may look optimized well in Photoshop is not always the case - in some instances you can still shread more bytes off those images using Yahoo's Developer tools. One of which is Smush.it - here is the link so you can try it yourself, make sure you read their Terms of Use before uploading images.

Try it yourself, you maybe surprised by the outcome!

IP.Content : How we are implementing it on here!

03 October 2011 - 12:26 AM

If you are new to IP.Content then you can easily become lost, we are aiming to bring our frontend online very soon. Yes, we use IP.Content already on here for some static pages, however our new frontend is much more advanced not only with the way we have implemented it, but also the entire design.

We encountered issues with using jQuery which doesn't work well with IP.Board's Prototype.js. However, you will soon see that we have modified our use of jQuery to work regardless, and to avoid conflicts.

We have had a few people ask us about the navigation system being uses on here, this was an advanced CSS menu system wrote in pure CSS, and uses no javasript. It has been modified in many ways and tied heavily in to IP.Board using IF Tests, so only certain elements show depending on which usergroup you are viewing from.

Our new online tools are functioning using IP.Content, these require some slight modifiying as we progress further to bring online the rest of the features. We will have some unique blocks available for IP.Content shortly, they were not available on the IPS Marketplace, so we coded our own.

Some areas of IP.Content is written by 3rd parties, we have purchased the full rights to use the code on here, these scripts will not be for sale, since they were purchased for use only on this website, and exclusively by Echelon Designers. Most blocks we use do not come into this category and will be free to use on your own IP.Conent based IP.Board.

We know the design layout will attract many people, since we are not using standard sliders like other IP.Boards, we have implemented jQuery and custom javascript routines that are far more advanced. The use of sliders these days are used on many websites, cms's, etc - but we wish to remain unique, and to do that requires our designs to be different in many ways.

Shortly, we will demonstrate the power of IP.Content on a new level. Most IP.Content related sites look very similar, when using blocks because they tend to use the same CSS as IP.Board - this can look quite effective if integrated properly, on the other hand it can make or break a site.

Also, note we are still tweaking our SEO, and the benefits show from our statistics.

Get ready, for IP.Content working in ways you never thought possible...
